Ask ten stylists what a client means when they say "I want more layers," and you'll get ten different haircuts. That's because "layers" is doing double duty for two goals that don't always pull in the same direction: volume and movement. Volume is a root-and-crown phenomenon. It's about how much the hair stands up and fills space close to the head. You build it by removing weight from the interior, shortening layers nearer the crown, and increasing elevation in the areas where you want lift to originate.
