You cut a horizontal line across a section, comb it down, and see small steps or notches instead of a continuous edge. This is almost always a section-size problem, not a hand-position problem.
Cause: Blade Length Mismatched to Section Size
Every blunt cut is a series of straight-line segments joined together. The wider your section relative to your blade length, the more that line depends on you closing the shear in one continuous, controlled arc without repositioning mid-cut. Repositioning — even by a few millimeters — is where steps get introduced, because the blade re-enters the hair at a slightly different angle or height than where it left off.

The line looks straight while wet, but once dry, the perimeter curves inward — heaviest at the corners, thinner in the middle, or vice versa. Stylists often chase this with more cutting, which usually makes it worse because it removes length unevenly a second time.
Cause: Inconsistent Hand and Wrist Position
A rounded edge is a geometry problem, not a sharpness problem. It happens when the cutting hand's distance from the head changes over the course of the line — typically the wrist drops or the elbow drifts as the arm reaches across the section, pulling the blade closer to the head at the ends of the line than in the middle (or the reverse).
Diagnose it by cutting a test line on a mannequin and watching your elbow position rather than the shear. If your elbow travels in an arc instead of a straight lateral line, your blade is tracing that same arc onto the hair. The fix is postural, not tooled: anchor the elbow and pivot from the shoulder, or take the line in shorter passes with a consistent stationary hand as your reference point (the comb, not the cutting hand, should be doing most of the guiding).
Secondary Cause: Tension Too Loose
Loose tension lets the blades flex apart slightly under pressure instead of shearing cleanly, which shows up as a soft, imprecise edge that can look rounded even when your hand position is correct. The line is straight in overall shape, but under close inspection — or once the client runs their fingers through it — you can feel or see tiny serrations rather than one clean edge. This is the symptom stylists most often misdiagnose as a hand-position issue when it's actually a blade-condition issue.
Cause: A Dull or Uneven Edge
A blade that's dull, or that has begun to wear unevenly along its length, doesn't shear hair cleanly in a single motion. Instead it catches strands at slightly different points along the blade and either bends them before cutting or cuts them a fraction of a second apart. On a blunt line, where every strand needs to terminate at the same point, that timing difference is what you're seeing as chatter.
Uneven wear is common on shears that get most of their use at one point along the blade — for example, always cutting near the tip.
