If you already know the difference between a thinning shear and a texturizer, you know the vocabulary. What most stylists never get taught formally is the math behind it — how tooth count and tooth spacing actually translate into how much bulk comes out on a given pass, and how that number needs to shift depending on what's sitting in your hand. What "Ratio" Actually Refers To
Cutting ratio describes the relationship between tooth count, tooth spacing, and the percentage of hair removed from a section on a single pass. As a general rule of thumb across the category:
- Low tooth count, wide spacing (roughly 15-20 teeth): lower removal per pass, in the neighborhood of 10-20% of the section. These are your finishing and blending shears.
- Mid tooth count (roughly 25-30 teeth): moderate removal, often 15-30% per pass depending on tension and how much hair is caught in the bite. This is the workhorse range for general bulk removal.
- High tooth count, tighter spacing (30-40+ teeth): more contact points per pass, which reads as heavier or more diffuse removal (25-35%+) but distributed across more, finer sections rather than fewer bold ones.
These are working ranges, not lab-certified numbers — every brand's tooth geometry, bevel, and spacing varies, and your own hand tension changes the real-world result. The point isn't to memorize a percentage, it's to understand that tooth count is a dial, not a fixed setting, and you should be choosing where on that dial you land based on the hair in front of you.
Density Changes the Math
The same shear on two different heads will not produce the same result, because density — not just texture — determines how much hair actually falls into the bite of the blade per closure.
- Fine or thin density: fewer strands per follicle unit means a high-ratio shear removes a disproportionate amount of the total mass in one pass. Sticking to the low end of tooth count, with wider spacing and fewer passes, prevents you from thinning past the point of coverage.
- Medium density: the mid-range tooth count is forgiving here — most of your day-to-day texturizing and bulk removal happens in this band.
- Thick or dense hair: higher tooth count and tighter spacing are appropriate because the volume of hair per section is high enough to absorb a heavier ratio without going see-through. Coarse, dense hair can often tolerate a second pass at a ratio that would be far too aggressive on fine hair.
A useful mental check before the first cut: estimate how many strands are actually in the section you're about to thin. If you can't fit much hair in the blade at all, you're already in fine-density territory and should be reaching for a lower ratio regardless of what the client's hair "looks like" from a distance.
Placement: Root, Mid-Shaft, or Ends
Ratio and placement are inseparable decisions.
- Near the root/scalp: reserved for reducing overall bulk and weight distribution on very dense heads. Use low-to-mid ratio here and go conservative — root-area over-thinning is the hardest mistake to grow out cleanly and can create a visible "halo" of shorter regrowth.
- Mid-shaft: the most common zone for bulk removal and blending between length sections. Mid-ratio shears with the section held at an angle away from the head let you remove weight without leaving a visible line.
- Ends: higher ratio is more forgiving here because you're removing terminal weight, not structural bulk. This is also where a single careless deep-point pass with a high-ratio shear creates the wispy, chewed look clients complain about.
How Many Passes Is Too Many
Passes compound. A 20% removal shear used twice on the same section doesn't remove 40% — it removes roughly 20% of what remains after the first pass, so the real cumulative effect is closer to 35-40% depending on how much overlap exists in where you place the second pass. Stylists who chase a result by repeating passes with the same shear in the same zone are the most common source of over-thinning. The better fix is almost always to either move to a different section, change your angle, or drop to a lower-ratio tool — not to keep closing the same shear on the same hair.
Reading the Two Failure Modes
Over-thinning ("fluff" or breakage-looking ends): shows up as flyaway strands standing off the head, a spiky or triangular silhouette forming at the point of most passes, or visible scalp/shorter-hair peekaboo near the root. It's almost always caused by too high a ratio too close to the root, or too many overlapping passes in one mid-shaft zone.
Under-thinning (bulk still sitting heavy): the section still swings as one solid mass, or a blunt-cut line is still visible under the layer you meant to blend. This is usually a mismatch in the other direction — a low-ratio finishing shear used where a mid-ratio bulk-removal tool was actually needed, or too few passes on genuinely dense hair.
Matching tooth count and spacing to density before you touch the hair, then controlling placement and pass count deliberately, is what separates a predictable ratio-based approach from guesswork.
