- Horizontal sectioning — parallel divisions that run side to side across the head. Straightforward, predictable, and easy to control weight distribution with.
- Vertical sectioning — divisions that run from the crown down toward the perimeter. Keeps guidelines consistent from panel to panel.
- Diagonal-forward sectioning — sections angled toward the face. Builds length and weight forward, toward the front hairline.
- Diagonal-back sectioning — the mirror of diagonal-forward, angled away from the face and toward the back. Builds weight and connection toward the nape and crown.
- Radial (pie) sectioning — wedge-shaped sections that all originate from a single point, typically the crown. Every panel shares one reference point.
None of these is more advanced than the others. They're tools, and the job is picking the right one — not proving you know the most complicated one.
Match the Pattern to the Service
Round layers and graduated shapes: reach for radial
Anytime the goal is a rounded, even buildup of layers radiating outward from a central point — think classic round-layer cuts or graduated shapes where weight needs to distribute evenly in every direction — radial sectioning is the right call. Because every wedge shares the same origin point at the crown, it's far easier to keep the curve of the shape consistent all the way around the head than it is with straight horizontal or vertical divisions, which tend to fight a round outcome.
Straight-line guard work and barbering: reach for vertical
When you're working with clippers and guards, or cutting straight-line barbering work where the guideline needs to travel cleanly from the crown down to the perimeter without curvature, vertical sectioning keeps every panel honest to that line. It's also the pattern that translates most directly to guard-based work, since the divisions mirror the path the clipper is already taking.
Face-framing and graduated perimeter work: reach for diagonal
Face-framing pieces, money pieces, and any perimeter work meant to draw the eye toward or away from the face call for diagonal sectioning. Diagonal-forward pulls weight and length toward the face — useful for framing and softening. Diagonal-back does the opposite, moving weight toward the back for graduated perimeters and shapes that build connection at the nape. Picking the wrong direction here is a common reason face-framing pieces end up flat or misplaced relative to the client's features.
Blunt, one-length, and simple layer setups: horizontal still earns its place
Horizontal sectioning isn't outdated — it's still the most direct route to a blunt, one-length result, and it's often the clearest starting pattern for classic layered setups where you're not chasing a round buildup or a directional pull. If the shape you want is level and doesn't need to curve or angle toward a point, horizontal keeps things simple.
