Every stylist has met a client whose hair looks like one texture on the intake form and behaves like another under the comb. That's because texture isn't a single number — it's a combination of strand diameter, curl pattern, density, and porosity, and the only reliable way to read all four together is still with your own hands. No app or in-salon device replaces the judgment you build over thousands of heads. What matters is knowing what to check, what each finding tells you, and how it should change the shear in your hand.

Strand Diameter: The Feel Test

Take a single dry strand between your thumb and forefinger and roll it gently. Fine hair feels almost silky and is hard to isolate; medium hair has a slight, perceptible presence; coarse hair feels firm and is easy to pick out individually, even with your eyes closed.

This single check has an outsized effect on shear selection. Coarse strands put up real resistance as the blades close, and a shear without enough sustained cutting power will push and bend the hair rather than shear cleanly through it — leading to snagging, extra hand fatigue, and a rougher finish. Fine hair is the opposite problem: too much edge aggression or a blade that isn't precisely honed can crush or fold the strand instead of severing it cleanly, which shows up later as split or frayed ends. Curl Pattern: Watch It Dry and Move

Curl pattern is best assessed on clean, product-free hair as it air dries, or by stretching a strand and watching how it springs back. Straight and loosely wavy hair lies flat and predictable under the comb. Tighter waves and curls coil unevenly, and coily textures shrink significantly from stretched to relaxed length — which changes where your cutting line actually lands.

Curl pattern doesn't just affect where you cut; it affects how the shear needs to perform. Curlier hair tends to clump and overlap at the point of cut, so the blades are doing more work per pass and need an edge that stays consistent through repeated, sustained cutting rather than one optimized for occasional light contact. It's also where the choice between a straight cutting shear and a texturizing or thinning shear gets more consequential, since removing bulk from a coil pattern behaves very differently than removing bulk from straight hair. Density: The Section Pull

Density is separate from diameter, and it's easy to confuse the two. To check it, take a one-inch section, part it down the middle with a fine-tooth comb, and look at how much scalp shows through. Minimal scalp visibility means high density; a lot of visible scalp with wide gaps between sections means low density, regardless of how coarse or fine each individual strand is.

Density is what determines how much texturizing or thinning work is appropriate at all, and it directly affects tooth count decisions on a texturizing shear. High-density heads generally tolerate — and often need — a shear with more teeth to remove bulk gradually and blend without leaving visible lines, especially in thick, coarse-and-dense combinations. Lower-density hair calls for a lighter touch and often fewer teeth or a smaller shear altogether, since removing too much volume from a low-density section shows up immediately as thin, see-through patches.

Porosity and Elasticity: The Wet-Strand Test

With the client's hair wet, take a strand and gently stretch it. Healthy elasticity means it stretches slightly and returns; hair that stretches significantly before breaking, or that absorbs water almost instantly, is telling you something about the cuticle's condition. High-porosity, compromised hair is more fragile at the point of cut, and a blade that isn't cleanly sharp can cause more visible damage to strands that are already under stress.

Porosity isn't a shear-selection factor in the same direct way diameter, curl, and density are, but it's a signal to cross-check against your other three readings before you commit to an aggressive texturizing approach. Compromised, high-porosity strands paired with high density and coarse diameter call for a more conservative approach regardless of what the density check alone would suggest.

Putting the Four Readings Together

None of these checks work in isolation — the value is in cross-referencing them before you pick up a shear. Coarse, dense, tightly curled hair calls for a shear built for sustained resistance and a steel that holds its edge through heavy use. Fine, low-density, straight hair calls for the opposite: a finer, more precise edge and a lighter hand with texturizing. Everything in between is a judgment call, and that judgment is built by running these four checks — feel, visual pattern, section pull, and wet stretch — on every head, every time, until it becomes second nature.
